Earlier this year, I was faced with a decision to make. My company wanted me to go go back to full-time and was moving my position back to headquarters…five hours away from our home. For what now feels like a frantic second, I was caught up in deciding if a move would be damaging to my kids, if my husband had the option to transfer, if I wanted to go back into the headquarters work environment, and if working full-time would hurt our family life.
And then my sister reminded me of one very important point. She said, “Just remember that you’re not happy in that job.” She was right. For years, I had quietly struggled with differences in opinion, differences in work ethic, and feeling like my years of experience in my previous job were of little value to my company.
Then my husband chimed in with his support, whether it be supporting a move, a career change, or just taking a break and fully dedicating myself to being a mom for awhile.
So, I made my decision. I was going to leave my position. I was going to spend the rest of the school year attending the kids’ events and volunteering to help wherever I could. I was going to walk the dog more often and start running again and pick up yoga. I was going to bake and have a spotless house. But, because I don’t think I know how not to work (not that raising a family isn’t work!) and because I was afraid of where we’d be financially if I wasn’t bringing in any income, I was going to build up my Etsy shop that I had created a couple of years ago and I was going to go after some corporate freelance work.
Sounds great, doesn’t it? Or maybe a little fantastical? For a little while, I was concerned it would all remain just that. But, as it turns out, the only fantastical part has been the spotless house and the baking. (Okay, the exercise could use a little more dedication, too, but I’ve picked up more of it that I had been doing!)
I’m proud to say that I’ve been more present in my kids’ little worlds while also working to establish my own business. Being my own boss has given me the advantage of taking the day off to volunteer at school and the luxury of dealing with work after bedtime stories, instead. Surprisingly, on the corporate freelance side, I have picked up a decent amount of work from the employer who forced me to make this decision for myself. Through this work, I have discovered that I do add value to the company, even if I am no longer regularly employed by them.
And the Etsy shop? Well, that is my favorite part. I am slowly but surely building up Molly & Gordon. I love to paint and craft, and I love to design personal pieces. I’ve set attainable goals for myself and I find myself actually enjoying my work, which is a great feeling. The enjoyment for me comes from working on a more personal level. I love being involved as a customer in Illinois plans her daughter’s first birthday party, or reconnecting with a sorority sister from college as she plans her wedding.
A recent goal was to set up a business page on Facebook and my next goal is to add more fans so I can continue to reach out to new customers while doing the work that I love to do. And that is where you come in!

08.5.11
Each Sunday my sister Ashlie and I co-write a blog post about our favorite things and host a linky party called Sister Sister Sunday. We live 2,000 miles apart (she is in Michigan and I am in California) so Sister Sister Sunday is a great way for us to keep in touch every week and stay connected. Each week our theme changes so make sure to visit us every Sunday to check out what we are into next.
We have been blogging together for a year and a half and a year ago we decided to add a linky party at the bottom of our Sunday posts. It has been such a great way for us to find out about cool blogs and projects and we really appreciate all of you coming back each week to show us what you are working on. As a token of our appreciation we are giving away a $25 giftcard this week and the winner is Dani from Drop in the Bucket. Thank you for following Kuzak’s Closet through Google Connect, please email me at kuzakscloset@gmail.com to claim your prize!

Sister Sister Sunday: Chocolate Chips Go a Long Way!

27.2.11
Leah from Ms Not So Perfect, she shared her crock pot chicken recipe.
Each Sunday we host a “Linky Party” so all of you can share your favorite things with us. Thank you all for linking up last week, we have so much fun checking out your posts and reading about your families. Our favorite post from last week’s party came from Jessica at A Few of My Favorite Things. She showed us how she made over her bedroom with wall decals. Isn’t this headboard decal cool?
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. white sugar
1 c. peanut butter
1 c. wheat germ
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. enriched flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. oatmeal
1 (6-oz.) pkg. chocolate chips
Stir together and add flour, soda, baking powder and salt.
Stir in oatmeal and chips.
Bake at 350 degrees 10 to 12 minutes. Makes a large batch.
I saw this recipe in Southern Living and I wanted to give it a try. I have made chocolate bark before so I thought toffee would be just as easy but after 2 failed attempts I found out that I was wrong. Once I finally got it right it was worth it! If you are going to try it I would suggest buying a candy thermometer and using a dutch oven.
Ingredients
2 cups chopped walnuts
1 1/4 cups butter
1 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1 tablespoon dark unsulphured molasses
2 teaspoons instant espresso
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk chocolate morsels
1 cup white chocolate morsels
Directions
Preheat oven to 350°. Butter a 15- x 10-inch jelly-roll pan.
Bake walnuts at 350° in a single layer in a shallow pan 8 to 10 minutes or until toasted and fragrant, stirring halfway through. Let cool 30 minutes.
Melt 1 1/4 cups butter in a 3 1/2-qt. heavy saucepan over medium heat; stir in granulated sugar, next 5 ingredients, and 1/3 cup water. Cook, stirring constantly, until a candy thermometer registers 290° (soft crack stage), about 20 minutes. Remove pan from heat, and stir in walnuts.
Quickly pour mixture into prepared pan, and spread into an even layer. Immediately sprinkle milk chocolate and white chocolate morsels over top; let stand 5 minutes. Swirl chocolate using an off-set spatula. Cover and chill until firm (about 1 hour). Break toffee into pieces. Store in an airtight container in refrigerator up to 7 days. Serve cold or at room temperature.
We are always looking for guest bloggers, it is really fun and easy. You don’t have to have a blog to be a guest blogger, if you are interested please send me an email at kuzakscloset@gmail.com.
