Trash to Treasure Coffee Table

Just before I left to go to NYC I finished painting the coffee table I picked up at Goodwill for our living room.  Deciding what color to paint it was the hardest part, (besides getting the paint into all of the knooks and crannies).

I went to Goodwill looking for something oval to counter balance all of the square furniture in the room.  I am not usually a fan of glass top tables (windex anyone?) but when I saw this gem in the half off section I knew I needed to take a second look.  I liked the odd shape and modern details and I thought it might help make the room look bigger so I took a gamble and brought it home.

Before

I originally wanted to paint it a brighter color so it would pop but I couldn’t find anything that would look good with the rest of the room.  One of the walls is brick so that really limits what looks good.  In the end I settled on Gray Squirrel, a color by Martha Stewart.  It is a mix of gray and tan so it will pull in the colors from the rest of the furniture and the brick wall.

Martha Stewart’s paint guide uses symbols so you can coordinate all of the colors in the room.  I looked for all of the colors that matched the furniture and artwork that was already in the room and most of them had the leaf or star symbol next to them.  Once I figured this out I looked for colors that I liked with either one of those symbols and found the color Gray Squirrel.

Pretty ironic because Harper does most of her squirrel hunting from our living room…ha!

Chris sanded it for me and then I primed it and then started to paint.  I took the glass out and propped it upside down on bricks to paint the first 2 coats, then I flippped it over and gave it 2 more coats.

I am keeping the top of it clear so we have pleanty of room for drinks and snacks.  I did find these cute laterns at Target and they look cute on top, especially at night when my battery operated candles are all lit up.

The table was $24.50 and I spent $15 on supplies so I am not out much.  Having a coffee table has really helped pull the look of our new living room together, now I just need to keep my eyes peeled for accessories.  Click here to see what our living room looked like before.
