Yesterday I was sitting on the rug in our living room working on a filing project for one of my clients when I noticed that there was a clump of dog hair sitting next to me. I had just vacuumed earlier in the day so I started thinking that it might be time to start shopping for a new vacuum. Ours doesn’t have the best suction and it smells kind of funky, it if wasn’t for the Febreze vacuum filters I would have gotten rid of it awhile ago.
According to consumer reports there are several popular models that range in price from $80 to $700. Below are the vacuums that they recommend but instead of relying on those reports I wanted to ask you what kind of vacuum you use and love. I am looking for something that is lightweight and that works well with pet hair. Thanks for your help!

My sister has two giant, hairy golden retrievers who shed like crazy. She has the Dyson Animal and can't stop raving about it. She says it's worth every penny you pay for it!

We have a Dyson and LOVE it! We've had it for over 3 years and have had to have it repaired a couple of times, but it comes with a lifetime warranty and Dyson customer service is the best I've ever dealt with. Both times, I was referred to a repair place in town and the repairs were finished in a day. Completely worth the investment.
I strongly recommend visiting a vacuum store and talking with them. I purchased a Royal Vacuum 9 years ago and LOVE it. Nothing on it is plastic (except the beater bar) and it sucks very well. I strongly recommend you have your vacuum “tuned up” every year or so, because it is an investment, just like a vehicle! Now that I have my Royal, I want a Miele Canister Vacuum, only because it's new and different. The vacuum store will also tell you why “on board attachments” really don't allow for clean carpets. And don't forget to negotiate, and maybe offer your current vacuum as a trade in!
might i ask.. what kind of dog is Harper? looks like a Cocker Spaniel? hes just adorable!!
Thanks for all of the comments, I am glad to hear all of your feedback on vacuums. It sounds like Dyson is worth the investment.
Kristin, I would love to know what kind of dog Harper is too! I have been tempted to do one of those saliva tests through the mail even though they say they are a scam. We rescued her and they told us she was a full breed cocker spaniel but she looks like she is mixed with either a beagle or a poodle.
I purchased the pet Dison about a year ago. Wish I had it along time ago. We have two indoor dogs, and the short hair sheds everywhere. I love my Dison!!!!!

I second the advice to go to the local vacuum store! I took back my 2 month old Hoover from Costco that needed repairs already and bought a Royal. It is about nine years old and works like a champ! I have four kids, cat and two hairy dogs (golden retriever and bernese mountain dog) so this thing gets a workout! I also have a miele cannister vac for a cabin and it also is amazing at picking up all of the dirt and stuff the kids and dogs drag in from the lake. Kristina
Kirby, there is nothing like it. We had been through a Bissell Pet vac and a few others before that.
Thanks to all of you for the great suggestions…I have a new cocker spaniel who sheds so will be looking for better vaccuum soon!
You're CUTE dog caught my eye at tt&js link party. We used to have a little girl dog that looked identical to yours! Thanks for the vacuum tips, I was just saying we need a new one.
your* not you're
I can't believe all the posts here and on facebook about a vacuum cleaner! Ha. Ha.
A Rainbow Vac. Plus it has a lot of other additional benefits.
We had our baby (dog) for 16 years! And my carpets always looked new and my house smelled fresh. Hope this helps.
P.S. Your baby is adorable!!
Can I just say that it's ridiculous that Harper can be that cute? What a great photo
The dog in the picture is really cute. She looks to me more of a beagle. But whatever she is, she's really adorable!
I also have the same problem in our house. I have a chow chow who loves to run around in the living room. She leaves me with a lot of hair on the floor at the end of the day.
