Garages inquiries have been coming in fast and furious this fall and I can’t complain, I love a great garage transformation. Garages in California are like basements in Michigan (where I started my business), they are often underutilized but with some smart storage additions they have the potential to add so much organization to a home.
For this project my clients already had a great structure. Their garage was finished with drywall and paint and floor epoxy so we didn’t need to handle that piece of the project like we did with the project I shared last week. They had some built in storage and a metal rack but they were lacking additional vertical storage to help get bikes, scooters, shoes, and sporting goods up and off the floor. I called in my friend Karin from Valet Custom Cabinets to help me design some smart storage that would increase the overall organization and functionality of the space.
My favorite addition to this garage is this amazing corner storage cabinet. All of the shelves are adjustable so bulky items like lacrosse bags and camping gear can be stored easily and little items like helmets and shoes have a perfect home on smaller shelves on the side.
There is something so exciting about a blank slate! To prep for this installation Tammy and I sorted through and the all of the contents of the garage and purged what we could with our client in a separate session. Only having the important “must keep” items in play made it easier to plan for the storage additions and also made installation day a breeze.
I pulled everything that was going to be kept out of the garage on installation day to make room for Valet to do their magic and then when each zone was installed I worked behind them to set up an organized system based on our storage plan.
My second favorite feature is this slat wall addition. There are plenty of extra hooks for the family to grow into but for now it holds all of the sporting goods that previously added clutter to this space.
My client and I went back and forth about slat wall accessories and in the end what we ordered worked out really well. She opted for these mesh baskets that could hold everything from camping chairs to pool kick boards, they are waterproof and easy to “shake out” make them the perfect solution.
The installation team from Valet is always fun to work with, they are total pros and are always willing to roll with the punches if we need to make adjustments or changes. When they say custom it really is custom!
My final favorite addition is this Omni Track that we added to the back wall of the garage for bikes and scooters. I’ve never worked with this product before but this family need to store 6+ bikes and several scooters and we wanted the system to be customizable to grow with the children.
As you can see this system is really versatile. There were 2 bikes missing on installation day and there is plenty of room for additions.
The lower track holds helmets and scooters and it’s low enough that the kids can grab them and go AND easily put them back.
This was fun garage transformation because were were able to take a current system to the next level and I love when that happens! I hope you enjoy all of the photos and eye candy and find some inspiration to get your garage organized before the weather hits this winter!
