I tackled this organizing project a few weeks ago but haven’t had a chance to put together this blog post featuring the closet before and afters. I originally started this custom closet project during a relocation that we helped a family with in June. After unpacking and organizing the kids’ closets I suggested that they replace the current system with a custom cabinet system from Valet. Both kids needed more storage and a system that they can grow into, plus the closets needed a luxury touch to match the style of the home. You’ll see what I mean in the before and afters.
When I help manage a custom closet project with Valet I work with the client to sort and purge the space. I manage the prep process (pulling out the existing system, patching and painting, etc.), and then on installation day once the cabinets are installed I start my organizing magic. For this project I was hoping to have Taylor’s help but we’ve been so busy she had to manage a different project on the same day. My entire team has been stretched thin lately, I’m hoping we can catch up soon!
This first closet belongs to a high school girl. She is very active with sports and loves fashion so it was important to organize everything so it would be logical and visible at the same time. Like many high school kids in Silicon Valley she has a crazy schedule and I know the closet won’t stay perfectly organized but I’m hoping she will make time each day to put things in their place. She and I will work together in the future for maintenance and purging so the space can stay under control.
Here is a breakdown of the entire closet transformation, before…empty…custom…organized!
Her old system consisted of random bins and drawers so the new custom drawers are a big improvement. They are loaded with her swimsuits, and sports uniforms and gear. I labeled all of the drawers to give her a friendly reminder that she needs to take the time to put things where they belong.
I jazzed up the space with matching velvet hangers, you know how much I love them! The space has a uniform and sophisticated look, what a lucky girl!
Before the transformation her bags were hooked on the folding door of the closet and piled on the floor. Valet put in a nice hook system to maximize vertical storage on the left wall and keep everything off the floor.
She has a lot of shoes so we did a mini shoe gallery with cubbies. She can fit 2 pair in each cubby front to back. I placed shoes that she is wearing this fall in plain sight and heels and boots in a less accessible spot. We are having a heat wave in California right now, I wish it was boot season but looks like the sandals need to stay out for a few more weeks!
I don’t have as many detailed shots of this next closet but I thought it would still be worth sharing the before and afters. This space belongs to a college bound teen who is off to school in a few weeks. I’m hoping that his newly organized space will help him pack for the dorms. He is a golfer and has a great preppy style. I had my iPhone playing tunes while I organized his closet and for some reason the shuffle feature wanted to keep playing Mariah Carey’s Christmas album, it was pretty funny.
Okay, now for the before and afters. Before he had no storage and the hanging bars didn’t work for his wardrobe, he actually has more hanging clothes than his sister. His swimsuits, socks, etc., were in bins on the closet floor that were not functional.
Major transformation right? The drawers made a huge difference and I know he will be better prepared to move on to the next chapter in his life, packing will be so much easier! He’s got luggage on the top shelf, t’s, sweaters, and pants on the opening shelving, shirts, suits, shorts hanging. He also has a cubby system to help organize shoes and hats.
Here is one last look at the organizing transformation, pretty jazzy!
I love spending time in closets like these, it’s almost therapeutic for me. With our busy organizing and estate schedule it felt good to have such a peaceful and productive afternoon!
This week we are catching up on organizing projects before the next wave of estate mania begins. It can be difficult to balance both ends of my business but it happens. My regular clients keep me so busy and I’m thankful for that! Cheers to another great week! I will be sharing emergency preparation posts all week so stay tuned!
