DIY Chalk Acorn Placeholder

My friend and fellow style blogger Monica at Living in Vogue and I were invited to a fun store in downtown Palo Alto called West Elm to help celebrate their 1 year anniversary.  We were tasked with styling a table using items from their Heritage and Murray collections and items from our own DIY table decorations. After visiting their store and exploring their collections we were inspired to create a rustic cabin table setting. I decided to make these DIY Chalk Acorn Placeholders. The beauty of these acorns is that they will be the most unique item at your holiday table and they are super easy to make!

I found all of the craft materials at my local Michaels Craft Store. At first I thought I might have a difficult time finding craft eggs in November but with the help of an employee we found them in the aisle with all of their shaped wood products. There are several chalkboard paints on the market but for my project I used FolkArt brand which worked well. Be sure to gently stir your chalkboard paint before you apply. Generally for painting projects like this I prefer to use foam brushes because the paint goes on even, is never too clumpy and they are very inexpensive. Part of what makes these acorns so cool is the spiral twine-work. Twine comes in different shades and sizes and the version I used proved to be perfect! Beware: thin twine will look more like string and the dried glue will show through the twine.

Chalkboard paint requires a process called “curing”. Large areas like walls require a longer drying period for their surface than these eggs. The most important thing to remember for this project is that your painted craft eggs needs two coats of chalkboard paint and need to dry completely after each application. Once completely dry you will be rubbing chalk on the entire painted surface. You don’t need to press hard or use multiple layers of chalk. Any areas that have a build-up of chalk can be wiped with a dry paper towel. Make sure the eggs are smooth and chalk-free or the hot glue will be more difficult to work with.  Avoid the urge to pre-cut your twine or you may fall short by the time you wind your way to the top of the egg. Don’t try to rush the gluing because it will seep through the twine. Use your scissors to trim a length at the top so that it looks like the acorn has a stem.

And, you’re done! Don’t they look adorable with the little stem? I specifically created the labeled acorns above for my niece Audrey and dog Harper. I am really pleased by how unique they look as placeholders on my Thanksgiving table and also love them piled into a fancy bowl for a creative centerpiece when my table isn’t set for company.
