Weekend Wrap Up: Carmel

Over the weekend Chris and I headed down to Carmel to hike, shop, and relax.  It was a really fun overnight trip, we are so lucky to live near such a beautiful place!

On Saturday morning we drove to Big Sur to hike at 3 different locations.  The first 2 hikes were short, one lead us to this beautiful waterfall, it is the only waterfall in California that flows directly into the ocean.

The second hike took us through some beautiful redwoods and we ended up at a cove right on the beach.  It was where the ships used to come to load and unload their cargo.  The waves were really pretty.

The third hike was over 11 miles long, it took us almost to the top of Mount Manuel.  We climbed over 3,000 feet and when we were almost to the top we discovered the trail had been destroyed because of the wild fires and we couldn’t get through.  We were pretty disappointed that we climbed all that way and couldn’t celebrate getting to the top, oh well, maybe next time.

After our long hike we drove back to Carmel and checked into our hotel, it was a cute Inn nestled in near shops, restaurants, and the beach.

We got ready for dinner and headed out to Clint Eastwood’s pub called the “Hogs Breath Inn” for a drink and an appetizer.  It was the cutest place, the actual pub was tiny and the beer garden was quaint.  We enjoyed the mural on the wall and some great calamari.

We had such a nice time, I would definitely go back.  After the Hog’s Breath we walked to Basil, a cute restaurant for dinner.  The food was great and the service was wonderful.  We didn’t feel bad sharing 2 desserts after our 11 mile hike.

The next morning we walked around the shops and had fun being tourists.  We ventured into A.W. Shucks, a popular oyster bar for lunch.

Before we left town we drove over to Clint Eastwood’s ranch for a drink on the patio.  (Thank you Clint for helping us have a wonderful trip!) The view of the ocean is so gorgeous and it was fun to relax and watch the sheep in the pasture.  I tried to get a reservation at the Inn when I was planning this trip but they were booked, I really want to stay there someday.

Well, I hope you enjoyed our trip as much as we did!  We can’t wait to go back, it was the perfect way to relax and getaway for the night.

  2. And try our other Hogs Breath Inn restaurant in the Palm Springs area if you ever slip down that far.

  3. It looks wonderful! I've visited Carmel once and would love to go back, but didn't get as far south as Big Sur, which is definitely on my list!

  4. Shhhhh! Don't tell everyone about Carmel! I would like to keep it a secret. It's my favorite spot in the whole world! We got married at Spanish Bay, and we try to stay in Carmel for our anniversary. The fireplace in is my favorite!! Thanks for the pictures, but now you made me miss California, and the cool summers.
